TWENTY speed cameras are to be installed at North-East accident blackspots, in a bid to cut road deaths.

Two fixed cameras will be set up in Gateshead, with mobile cameras proposed for a further 18 sites across the borough.

The fixed cameras will cover the A167 road at Birtley and on the B1296 Sheriff's Highway. Between those two spots, 13 people have been killed or seriously injured, with a further 40 hurt. A traffic survey last year on the A167 at Birtley showed that 48 per cent of motorists were exceeding the route's 30mph speed limit.
