A scout leader has been jailed for 11 years after a court heard he filmed himself abusing young people.

Cleveland Police discovered pornogrpahic videos and Internet images at the Middlesbrough home of Paul Woodruff.

A London scout master referred to as "Uncle David" was also involved in a video which was specially made for him by Woodruff.

Woodruff's barrister Graham Reeds told Teesside Crown Court: "It shows the depth of the pathetic situation which has him in its grip.

"It is in some ways akin to somebody addicted to drugs."

Woodruff, 41, and his 76-year-old mother were driven from their council house on the Brambles Farm estate of Middlesbrough after a former scout, now aged 20, reported him to the police.

Woodruff was convicted on Wednesday at Teesside Crown Court of the rape and two indecent assaults of a scout aged 13.

He pleaded guilty to another indecent assault on the boy, indecently assaulting two more scouts aged 11 and 13, and to another 15 of making indecent photographs of children between 1995 and 1997.

Woodruff, who was a leader of a troop on Teesside, took boys to meet other leaders in London.

Child Protection Unit officers from Cleveland are now working with Metropolitan Police officers in Harrow, London.

Judge John Walford said: "It is apparent from the material that was exhibited in the trial that you have an entrenched deviant streak, which you in part acted out with these boys.

"It is apparent that these offences were part of a sustained course of sexual abuse, you befriended and won the trust of boys, principally it would seem from your position in the Boy Scouts.

"You gained their trust, gained the confidence of their parents so that they were allowed to come and visit you and stay at your house.

"You cruelly abused that trust and that confidence by sexually abusing them for your own gratification.

"Your behaviour was repulsive to all right-thinking people."

Woodruff, of Lowfield Avenue, Middlesbrough, was jailed for 10 years for rape, another 12 months for the child porn, and also banned from working with children for life, and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

When questioned by police, Woodruff admitted befriending the boy, who is now a young adult, but denied any sexual impropriety.
