THE public are to be consulted on how best to develop a strategy to address the needs of young people in Newton Aycliffe.

Several organisations are operating in the town's West ward with the aim of working with people aged up to 25.

Those involved include the Children's Fund, Sure Start, Education in the Community, Sedgefield Police, Positive Futures (youth offending service), Connexions and Impact.

Because of the large number of groups involved, it is felt that a young people's strategy should be developed to ensure all organisations are working together to address the issues.

A consultation and fun day is to be held in Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre next Wednesday, from 10am to 3pm.

The day will start with presentations by the various organisations, followed by the consultation process at 11am.

There will be an activity session, featuring a rock-climbing wall and trampolining. After lunch there will be an evaluation from 1.30pm.

The consultation will involve groups broken down into parents and toddlers aged up to four, young people aged five to 13 and those over 13, so that a wide range of issues can be covered.

More than 50 local people will be involved in the consultation exercises.
