SECURITY is being increased at a tourist attraction following a series of attacks by vandals.

The Tees Cottage Pumping Station, in Darlington, has been attacked during recent weeks.

Windows have been smashed, a fuel tank punctured and tyres slashed at the site, which is preparing to hold its Easter open days.

Spokesman Jim Prentis said it was believed that youngsters were behind the incidents and the station was working with police to crack down on the problem.

Mr Prentis said: "We think it is just two or three kids but there is a lot more security on the site now."

The station, which is more than 150 years old, underwent a £100,000 refurbishment last year.

In its heyday, it pumped 2.4 million gallons of water a day and required six tons of coal to keep it operating.

It was converted to gas power in 1914, and to electricity in 1926.

Now owned by Northumbrian Water, the pumping station ceased full-time working in 1980.
