A PENSIONER was in a critical condition in hospital last night after being struck by a car two weeks ago.

The 79-year-old, from Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, was involved in the accident on Saturday, April 12, in Darlington town centre.

Her injuries were initially not thought to be life-threatening, but her condition worsened and she is now critical in Bishop Auckland hospital.

Police have renewed an appeal for witnesses to the accident, which happened at about 5.30pm.

The victim, who is not being named, was outside Clark's Yard, Skinnergate, when she stepped into the road and was hit by a large car that was reversing at a slow speed.

The motorist drove off without stopping, but police say it was possible the driver was unaware there was an accident.

The car was blue with a partial registration number of OPE or OPC.

The victim was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with a fractured hip, but was later moved after her condition became critical.

Police would like to speak to the driver or members of the public who witnessed the accident.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the police accident unit on 0191-386 4929.
