A NEW supermarket will bring a further 60 jobs to Teesdale when it opens next week.
Store chain Safeway will open its £12m Barnard Castle development on Wednesday. The development replaced a smaller store next to the Galgate car park.
People have welcomed the move, saying it will offer more choice for shoppers and keep trade in the area.
The development has taken five years, because the company was involved in lengthy negotiations with Teesdale District Council about the price of a piece of land measuring 640 sq ft.
Charles Anderson, Teesdale District Council's chief executive, said: "The council and Safeway have had their skirmishes in the past, but these are part and parcel of commercial life. The new store looks very good. I look forward to its opening."
Local store manager Alex Smith is transferring from the old premises, which will close on Tuesday.
A Safeway spokeswoman said: "This supermarket will be an enjoyable shopping experience and also a focal point for the whole community, just like the old store. We are also delighted to be able to provide a vital jobs boost in the area."
During a preview on Tuesday, Mr Smith will present £1,000 to Barnard Castle Mayor Councillor Margaret Hamilton for St Teresa's Hospice, in Darlington.
The company is giving another £1,000 to Teesdale Community Resources.
