THE 65-year-old son of the founder of the Multiple Sclerosis Society will pass through the region on a mammoth charity walk.

Simon Cave is tackling the One Million Steps for MS walk to mark the society's 50th anniversary.

His father, Sir Richard Cave, whose wife had the illness, launched the group at a meeting in Chelsea in 1953.

The 500 mile walk starts today at Edinburgh's Forth Road Bridge and will end in five weeks' time at Tower Bridge, London.

Mr Cave will arrive in Newcastle on May 2 and then pass through Sunderland, Durham, Darlington, Catterick, Ripon and Harrogate.

He said: "In addition to fundraising, I hope that my walk will help to raise awareness of the limitations imposed by this cruel disease."
