A PUBLIC inquiry into plans for a multi-million pound redevelopment scheme begins next week.
The decline of Seaham's Parkside estate prompted Easington District Council to earmark it for its next estate action scheme, in 1993.
An independent survey in 1999 to gauge support for the area's redevelopment found that two-thirds of residents welcomed the move.
Now a public inquiry into the compulsory purchase of land and property at Parkside is due to start on Tuesday.
It will take place at Seaham Leisure Centre, Deneside, at 10am, and will be led by inspector Brian Rogers.
Evidence will be provided by those appealing against the purchase and Easington District Council, and the inspector may also hear residents' views.
Following the inquiry, he will make a report to the Secretary of State, who will decide whether or not to approve the compulsory purchase order.
