ASSAULT allegations against Newcastle player Jonathan Woodgate are still under investigation, police said last night.
The Middlesbrough-born football player has denied claims he punched Middlesbrough teenager Anthony Strange in the toilets at the Dickens Inn, in the town's Southfield Road, on Tuesday, April 15.
Mr Strange made a statement to the police, but now says he does not wish to pursue the matter.
However, a spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said last night that the investigation is continuing.
Mr Woodgate's agent said at the time that the allegation was without foundation, and said there were people who wanted to make mischief about Mr Woodgate, who was solely interested in contributing to the success of Newcastle United Football Club.
