TWO robbers have been jailed after staging two armed raids on the same day.

The first target was Sherburn Post Office, on the outskirts of Durham City, on January 15.

The second attack, at the Northern Rock bank, in Front Street, Chester-le- Street, happened two hours later.

William Hughes, 45, of no fixed address, and David Reid, 42, of Chevely Park, Belmont, admitted conspiracy to rob and related firearms offences.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how two female counter staff had an imitation gun pointed at them during the first raid.

The female counter assistant at the second raid was "almost speechless with fear" as she tried to raise the alarm.

The pair made off empty-handed after both raids, despite Hughes demanding money at both premises.

Reid took on the role of getaway driver after both raids.

Because of their past criminal records, both were sent to prison.

The court heard how both men had lists of offences for robbery, and Hughes had been released from prison only days before carrying out the offences.

Judge Maurice Carr recommended Hughes served eight years and Reid served six years in prison.
