LOCAL people are being advised on how they can impress the judges of a culture contest when they visit the region next week.

Eight of the panel of 12 people from the media and arts world, who will decide who wins the European Capital of Culture 2008 title, will visit NewcastleGateshead to assess its worthiness.

On Tuesday, they will meet leading arts figures connected with the region, including Angel of the North artist Antony Gormley and musical maestro Bradley Creswick.

They will also go out on the town, where they will be able to chat to local people.

To help boost the region's chances of success, residents are being advised to signal their support for the title bid.

The tips to impress include:

* Look out for the judges, smile and tell them what 2008 would mean to you.

* Request posters and display materials for your home, hotel, shop or caf, from 0191-243 8800.

* Go out for the evening on Tuesday to show them what a vibrant place NewcastleGateshead is.

* Sign the Back the Buzz sheets in public buildings and online at www.VisitNewcastleGateshead.com, or on the hotline 0191-243 8815.

While some of the judges' activities during their two-day visit to the region are fixed, they will be allowed to choose others from a list of 30.
