Spennymoor completed a gruelling schedule to win promotion back to the UniBond League Premier Division with a 3-0 victory over Witton Albion on Saturday.

Back in August there didn't seem to be a future for the club after it was suspended by the FA, but on Saturday night Moors were celebrating after the win over Witton Albion made sure they finished in the second automatic promotion spot.

And they just missed out on the title on goal difference after leaders Alfreton drew 1-1.

Assistant manager Jason Ainsley said: "It was a fantastic day. Everything seemed to go right for us. We scored a couple of early goals, they had a man sent off, and we won in front of our fans.

"We could have won the title, but we're happy enough with the runners-up trophy.

"It's a great achievement considering what happened earlier in the season, when we were nearly kicked out of football.

"And then to complete promotion with four games in the last week with a squad of just fifteen players is something else."

Witton had midfielder Ross Clegg dismissed for two bookable offences after 17 minutes, and the celebrations were starting when Ainsley put Moors into the lead after 25 minutes.

It was 2-0 just before half time when Ainsley crossed for Danny Brunskill to head the second.

Preen made sure after 52 minutes when he scored from a through ball after 52 minutes.

Bishop Auckland finished their season with a 1-0 away win at relegated Trafford. Stuart Irvine scored the goal from the penalty spot after 20 minutes.

Manager Brian Honour said: "I'm delighted with the players' commitment over the last few months. Hopefully, we can carry that on into next season, and we'll be amongst the promotion contenders."

In the Premier Division, Whitby lost 1-0 at home to Bradford Park Avenue. Gateshead, who are still hoping to win their appeal over the venue of their play off semi final, lost 2-0 at Barrow, whose manager Kenny Lowe, once of Darlington, resigned after the match. Blyth drew 1-1 at Stalybridge, John Hutton scoring their goal.
