A FRONT-SEAT passenger is in hospital with serious facial injuries after the car he was travelling in overturned.
The accident happened at about 11.45pm on Sunday, when the Vauxhall Astra was travelling north east on the A690 at West Rainton, near Durham.
The driver lost control and the vehicle struck a kerb at speed and overturned, coming to rest on its side.
The passenger, a 20-year-old man from Shiney Row, Wearside, is undergoing surgery at Sunderland Eye Infirmary.
The 22-year-old driver, from Houghton-le-Spring, suffered lacerations to his scalp and arm. A 19-year-old back-seat passenger, from Penshaw, was left with whiplash and in shock. Both were treated at the University Hospital of North Durham.
A section of the A690 was closed for about 90 minutes.
