ROYAL advisors have inspected one of the region's Grade I-listed buildings.

The Sir William Turner Almshouses at Kirk-leatham, near Redcar have been nominated for the Prince of Wales National Almshouse Association (NAA) Award.

The building has recently been renovated and 25 flats and cottages have been created in a £1.7m project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Housing Corporation, ICI and the NAA.

Prince Charles is patron of the association and a team of his advisors spent two hours examining the 326-year-old almshouses.

Peter Sotheran, spokesman for the almshouses' governing committee, said: "A spokesman for the NAA told me that Prince Charles regards our almshouses as being among the top four or five in the country for the quality of its architecture and heritage.

"The advisors were particularly interested in how we managed to maintain alms-houses at one side of the site while building was going on at the other side.
