A CRACKDOWN on a village's rowdy youths has proved a success.

Police launched Operation Counter at the beginning of last month, to combat rising complaints of youth nuisance and disorder in Dipton, County Durham.

During the two-week operation, local officers were backed by the Durham Police beat support unit from police headquarters at Aykley Heads.

Seven people were arrested and charged with public order offences.

Reg Ord, who represents Dipton on Durham County Council, has written to Durham's Chief Constable, praising the team's efforts.

"A few weeks ago, the anti-social behaviour had become unbearable, especially for elderly residents," he said.

"Their quality of life was very poor and some people were struggling to get a decent night's sleep.

"I arranged for more street lighting in the village and that has helped a great deal, but the police operation has really made a difference."

Tom Foggett, the ward councillor for Derwentside District Council, urged police to keep up their good work.

"It has been pretty appalling in the past for elderly residents," he said.

"Kids as young as nine are out there until 11 at night, drinking and shouting and using foul language. The operation has made a big impact, but it must be kept up."

Sergeant Andy McConnell, who ran the operation, said: "We are very satisfied with the result.

"The problem has been dealt with in this instance, but we will continue to monitor the situation in Dipton and will take further action if necessary."
