BAILIFFS were called to a football club yesterday over unpaid business rates.

Debt collectors were sent to Spennymoor United's Brewery Fields ground because of outstanding business rates, believed to be about £4,000.

An official from the club, which has just been promoted back to the UniBond League Premier Division, immediately resolved the situation, which is said to have been the result of a misunderstanding.

A spokesman for Sedgefield Borough Council, which was owed the money, said: "The debt stems from unpaid business rates which the club had agreed to settle.

"An official has contacted us to say the outstanding bill will be paid and therefore we asked the bailiff to leave."
