DOG-OWNERS are being urged to take part in an event later this month which will help keep their pets safe.

Stockton Borough Council's animal welfare officers are offering a dog-chipping service that enables a stray dog to be identified and returned to its owner.

The Micro Chipping and Responsible Dog Ownership roadshow will be held in the car park of Preston Park, Eaglescliffe, on Wednesday, May 28, from 11am to 3pm.

The event, which is being run in partnership with the National Canine Defence League, offers free chipping to any dog owner in receipt of a state benefit, including child benefit. For those not in receipt of benefit there is a nominal charge of £10.

Michelle Johnson, animal welfare officer at the council, said: "Few things are more harrowing than losing your pet."
