TWO teachers have won an award for their science teaching.
Joni White and Diane Buckle, of Framwellgate Primary School, Durham, won £100 for resources in the national Top Teacher award organised by the Ariel Stains and Science Schools Programme.
The programme, aimed at nine to 11-year-olds, is aligned with the National Curriculum and is designed to help pupils to discover how science affects everyday chores such as doing the laundry.
Pupils carry out practical experiments and homework assignments with the family and are asked to design a washing tablet that will remove tough stains.
Head teacher Margaret Richardson said: "Joni and Diane show great commitment to teaching pupils science and demonstrate real eagerness in promoting an understanding of the subject. The school is very proud of their win."
Science co-ordinator Miss White said: "We are always looking for new ways to enrich the teaching of science in the classroom."
Mrs Buckle added: "Science is exciting and children have great fun completing investigative work. The Ariel programme proved a useful and enjoyable means of getting the message across."
Dr John Bailey, of Procter and Gamble, manufacturers of Ariel, said "As a scientist myself, I'm delighted to think we are helping kids get more excited about science and technology."
