NEW entrants to organic egg production are being sought in Yorkshire for a scheme supplying major UK retail outlets.
The specialist organic company Hi Peak Feeds, of Killamarsh near Sheffield, runs a feed-for-eggs contract with producers, using 2,000-bird mobile production units.
The package included organic feed and full technical back up and, in return, guaranteed a market for all the eggs, explained Mike Burrows of Hi Peak. The expansion was due to increasing demand from supermarkets.
"This opportunity for new entrants is in marked contrast to most other organic sectors, where farmers are struggling in the face of either over-supply or cheap imports or both," he said.
