AN OFF-DUTY prison officer who was punched in the face outside Yates's Wine Lodge, on North Road, Durham, last Tuesday, has been released from hospital and is described as comfortable.

The 35-year-old man suffered serious head injuries when he fell to the ground, and was detained in intensive care at Newcastle General Hospital. A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

DUTY CHENISTS: The duty chemists for the Horden and Peterlee area this weekend will be Roger Myers, Seaside Lane, Easington Colliery, on Sunday, and Moss Chemists, William Brown Medical Centre, Manor Way, Peterlee, on Bank Holiday Monday. They will open between noon and 1pm.

COFFEE MORNING: A coffee morning will be held tomorrow atParkinson Memorial Methodist Church, Sherburn, between 9.30am and 11.30am, in the small hall at Durham Town Hall. There will be various stalls and proceeds will go to the church building fund.

MORE ROOM: Durham City Council is being asked to grant planning permission for a two-storey pitched roof extension at the side of a house in Chalfont Way, Meadowfield.

MAST PLAN: Vodaphone has notified Durham City Council of its plans to install a 15-metre high mobile phone mast on land at Whitehouse Farm, Leamside.

CAMPAIN MEETS: The next meeting of the Durham branch of Campain will be held on Tuesday, May 13, at 7pm, in committee room 3a, County Hall, Durham, when Lady Ann Calman will talk about the work of the North Durham Primary Care Trust, of which she is chairwoman.

BREATHE EASY: The Breathe Easy group for Durham and Derwentside will be meeting on May 14, between 2pm and 4pm, at Lanchester Community Centre.

ANTIQUES VALUATION: Cancer Research UK is holding an antiques valuation evening at Bethel United Reformed Church, in Low Chare, Chester-le-Street, next Friday, at 7pm. There will be a £1 per item charge for valuation. There will also be a raffle and refreshments.

KARAOKE NIGHT: Chester-le-Street and District branch of the Sunderland AFC Supporters' Association is holding an end-of-season charity karaoke night at Relton Terrace Workingmen's Club on Sunday, May 11, from 6pm. All proceeds will go to a children's hospital charity.
