A WORKER was trapped in a heated rolling machine at a factory yesterday.
The man, who is in his mid-forties, trapped his left hand in the machine while he was working at SCA Packaging, Faverdale Industrial Estate, Darlington.
Police and ambulance crews were called to the factory at 7.42am yesterday.
The worker, who has not been named, was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Middlesbrough General Hospital for surgery.
He suffered serious injuries, but his condition was described as stable last night.
The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation and a representative was due to visit the cardboard manufacturers yesterday.
A spokeswoman for the North-East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to an incident where a man at work had trapped his hand in a heated roller press.
"He suffered burns and crush injuries and was taken to Darlington Memorial and later transferred to Middlesbrough for theatre."
SCA Packaging refused to comment about the incident.
