A LONDON antique collector won a frenzied bidding war to buy two rare vases at a North auction house.
A banjo vase went for £2,200 and a "drunken bricklayer" vase sold for £480 at Thomas Watson Auctioneers, in Darlington.
Both Whitefriars glass pieces dated from the late 1960s or early 1970s.
The vases were in a rare aubergine colour and were hotly contested by bidders in the salerooms and on three telephone lines.
