OPERA stars will converge on a theatre to celebrate a great composer next month.

Singers from the Royal Opera House, English National Opera and Opera North will appear in Pure Puccini at the Gala Theatre, Durham, on Monday, June 2.

It will feature favourites from some of the composer's best-loved operas, including La Boheme, Turandot, Tosca and Madame Butterfly, as well as the lesser known La Fanciulla Del West and Il Tabarro.

Among those performing will be tenor Wynne Evans, who has sung major roles with Welsh National Opera, English National Opera and English Touring Opera, as well as at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Soprano Naomi Harvey has starred with Welsh National Opera and English Touring Opera, and appears regularly on BBC Radio Two's Friday Night is Music Night.

Joining them will be celebrated baritone Mark Evans.

A theatre spokesman said: "Sung in Italian, Pure Puccini offers a mix of arias, duets and ensembles from Puccini's operas and promises to be a diverse, passionate and exciting experience."

Tickets are available from the box office on 0191-332 4062.
