AN exhibition of local artistic talent opened at the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate over the weekend.

Almost 300 amateur and professional artists from across the Harrogate district submitted their art to the Harrogate Open.

Selectors Hilary Diaper, curator of the Leeds University Art Gallery, David Blackburn, artist, and Ronnie Duncan, art collector, chose 140 works of art from more than 700 brought to the gallery.

Jane Sellars, exhibition curator, said: "We were impressed by the range and quality of the work, particularly in the oil paintings, drawings and watercolours.

"There were many lively, original and quirky works to choose from - it was good to see the diversity of artistic talent around in the Harrogate District."

A £200 prize was awarded to artist Matthew Wyatt for his oil painting Building New York City, other awards went to Simon Palmer for his watercolour Last Light and Paula Bishop for her screen print Testament.

The display will run until June 29. For details, call (01423) 556188.
