A RARE Dracula orchid has had hundreds of visitors flocking to a North-East flower show.

The distinctive flower is being exhibited in the region for the first time over the bank holiday.

The species has helped increasee numbers at the Raby Castle Orchid Show, near Staindrop, County Durham, which continues today.

Jack Wubben, one of Europe's leading orchid growers, has again chosen Raby Castle as the only show he will exhibit at in the North of England this year.

He has carefully transported the Dracula orchids, along with more than 75 different species, from his collection, in Holland.

Marketing supervisor Catherine Turnbull said: "It's been hugely successful, the weather's held off and so far we have had about 1,500 visitors. We are expecting them to continue coming in thick and fast over the bank holiday weekend.

"Jack Wubben did a lecture on the Dracula orchid and the response was absolutely amazing. It was very well received and created quite a stir."

The orchid had developed a pattern which resembles two beady eyes in the centre of the flower.

This attracts insects looking for a mate, aiding pollination and ensuring the survival of the species.

The glasshouses have proved a popular spot for orchid enthusiasts to meet and swap growing tips, with information changing hands at a rapid rate.

The show, fast becoming one of the most significant in the region, finishes today.

One of the highlights will be a lecture by local expert Dr Richard Warren on orchid conservation. The show is open from 11am to 5pm.

Entrance to Raby Castle park and gardens is £3 for adults and £2.50, which includes free admission to the orchid show.

A ticket for the castle, park and gardens is available at £6 for adults, £5 concessions and £2.50 for children.
