History maker Neil Wainwright will have many memories to treasure when he finally hangs up his boots, but Saturday's strike against Leyton Orient must rank as his finest.

It was his second half effort which salvaged a point for Darlington but more poignantly handed Wainwright a place in the history books.

The winger had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes when he headed home Ian Clark's cross in the 76th minute.

And Wainwright revealed his delight at claiming such a feat.

"It's a great feeling to be the last ever scorer at Feethams," said Wainwright.

"I wanted to be part of the occasion but I never thought I'd be the one to get such an important goal.

"It does mean a lot to me and it's a moment I will never forget. To come on and get the last goal at Feethams is an absolute dream."

Quakers suffered a first half scare when the visitors stormed into a two-goal lead although strikes from Jim Corbett and Wainwright ensured fans would not be going home disappointed on their big day.

"We couldn't have had a better send-off because the fans were absolutely fantastic," said Wainwright.

"We were all well up for the game and this was one we didn't want to lose.

"They probably edged it in the first half but we came out in the second and were a lot more positive.

"We had quite a few chances before I came on and we could have won it later on when Bazza (Conlon) had a chance."

Wainwright will return to the club when the squad reassembles for pre-season training in July, looking to improve on this season's 14th place.

"It has been a disappointing season for us but we know we have the players who can do well for the club and hopefully we can get it right next season," said Wainwright.

"I was down at the new stadium on Friday and it's looking fabulous. All the players are looking forward to playing in it."
