AN awards programme dedicated to young sports competitors has received a welcome boost.
The Darlington Young Sports Winner award scheme recognises the talents of youngsters aged eight to 18 who are involved in sport as individuals, teams or as coaches.
This year's awards have been boosted by sponsorship by Barratt Homes and the Mayor's Charity Fund.
John Richards, managing director of Barratt Homes, presented a sponsorship cheque for £750 and Mayor Doris Jones gave a cheque for £500 from the charity fund.
Mr Richards said: " I am delighted that we are able to support Darlington's Young Sport Winner of the Month programme. It is wonderful to see the commitment and dedication of young people across the borough to their chosen sport, and equally as rewarding to be able to recognise their efforts through the programme."
People can nominate a candidate for sports winner of the month, and those candidates are then put forward for the annual sports winner of the year award.
The scheme is supported by The Northern Echo and the annual awards will take place on December 17.
It is also supported by Darlington Borough Council and the Master Skills Sporting Academy, which has been representing youngsters in sport for almost 20 years.
