AN internationally renowned musician is giving the first public performance on Bishop Auckland Music Society's new Steinway piano.
The £43,000 instrument was delivered to the Throne Room, in Auckland Castle, in November after the society was awarded grants for its purchase from the Northern Arts Regional Lottery Fund and the Foundation for Sports and Arts.
The society raised the balance, helped by a £200 contribution from Wear Valley District Council.
Australian Piers Lane has been chosen to give the first concert on Friday, performing a selection of pieces by Haydn, Schubert, Liszt, Bartok, Debussy and Chopin.
He makes frequent appearances on Radio 3 and has recorded more than 20 award winning compact discs.
Tickets are £9, concessions £8, from Top Sounds, in Newgate Street, telephone (01388) 609444, from Peter Cooper on 0191-386-8622, or at the door.
