ROADWORKS that will close a busy road on the edge of Thirsk for three months have been challenged by Sowerby Parish Council.

North Yorkshire's highways department is to replace the river bridge at World's End and use traffic lights to divert vehicles along the narrow Blakey Lane.

At first, engineers estimated the bridge could be replaced in two sections and the road would remain open.

It has since proved impossible and Sowerby councillors are worried closure of the road which leads to a tip will encourage fly-tipping.

Extra traffic on Blakey Lane is thought to be hazardous, while councillors have highlighted that another bridge along the route has already been damaged on several occasions.

"We do not want any debris going into the Cod Beck and we need to press for an aesthetically pleasing design in this attractive area," said Councillor Derek Stratton.

Councillor Don Cartridge, who has campaigned to have heavy traffic diverted away from the road, said it was madness to attempt to close it for three months.

"It is not acceptable to divert traffic down Blakey Lane. It is already over-used."
