The Asda store in Thornaby is looking for good causes that could use a helping hand.

SAFETY COMPETITION: Pupils from schools across the borough of Stockton have taken part in a Spot The Pills From Sweets competition, which aimed to increase health and safety awareness in the home. The event also highlighted the need for parents to keep drugs out of children's reach and in their original containers.

AWARDS PLAN: Stockton Borough Council's Care For Your Area panel is planning to reward residents, groups or children for their work in caring for their local environment or area at a ceremony in July at Preston Hall Museum, Eaglescliffe. To make a nomination, call (01642) 391959.

FOOTBALL WINNER: Fenton Moore, 12, from Billingham, won the town's Asda store's table-top football competition. Fenton has won the table football and a £50 voucher to spend in the store.

OPEN SERVICE: Guisborough Salvation Army will hold an open air service, complete with brass band, at Great Ayton, on Sunday, at 3pm. A spokesman said that the idea was to attract people who do not usually attend a Sunday service. All welcome.

NEW SHOP: Plans to change the use of the former Stranton Service Station, Park Road, Hartlepool, into a shop selling kitchens will be discussed by members of Hartlepool Borough Council's planning committee.

NEW HOMES: Dalton Homes (NE) has applied to Hartlepool Borough Council for planning permission to build two pairs of semi-detached houses on the former Health Centre in the town's Frederic Street.
