SW Durham Vets League: Willington made an excellent start to the new season when they whitewashed the visiting reigning champions, Spennymoor A.

The home side came through with a comprehensive 62 shots to 42 and took all eight points.

Coxhoe pulled off the best result in the First Division when they held the visiting league champions, Leeholme to a draw at 79 shots each and each team taking two rinks.

Central Ladies League

The The opening bowl was bowled by the League President, Enid Charlton and was followed by the very enjoyable mixed team competition. The eventual winners were Jane McGowan (King George V), Margaret Stocks (Cockton Hill), Hazel Denham (Mainsforth) and Margaret White (Bishop Auckland). The runners-up were Sheila Hutchinson (Cockton Hill), Rene Thompson (Dean Bank), Margaret Allinson (King George V) and Brenda Bland (Vane Tempest).

Tea, raffle and tombola prizes were provided by the Brandon Club. The President-elect, Sheila Hutchinson thanked everyone concerned in the organisation and for playing in an excellent start to what she saw as being a very successful season.

Crook League

Crook Jelly's Bar B were able to add a draw to their only win of the season in the Second Division when they took the final singles point to level with the visiting Willington Brewer's Droop in their re-arranged match. The home side had two singles points from Micky Harker and one each from John Finn, Craig Smith and Justin Elgy to add to the doubles of Harker and Elgy. The Brewer's levelled with singles points from Stephen Britton, Vince Conaty, Jimmy Fleming, Billy Wragg and Dean Fleming to add to the doubles of Bob Saunders and Stephen Britton. With the score at six each, Stephen Britton put the visitors ahead when he beat Lee Genner, but Jelly's forced the draw when Scott Hutchinson beat Billy Wragg.

The Second Division is led by Crook Coach and Horses B who lead Crook King's Head by 16 points with Hunwick Club a further ten points adrift.

Bishop Auckland and District League

Spennymoor Weardale inflicted the second consecutive defeat on title challengers, Bishop Auckland Snooker Club B when they came from behind to go to victory when Shaun Archer beat Michael Hoggart in both the captain's games to snatch an odd point success. The home side had two singles points from Tommy Irvin and one each from Martin Short, Shaun Archer and Shane Casen, whilst the Snooker Club levelled with two points from Kevin Stewart and one each from Paul Willey, Michael Hoggart and Paul Stewart. The visitors went ahead when Steve Ballanaves and Kevin Stewart won the doubles but Archer sealed their fate in the captain's games.

Spennymoor Ash Tree shot six points clear at the top after they only dropped three points at Willington Brewer's Droop. The Brewer's had two points from Stephen Britton with the other point coming from Billy Wragg. The Ash Tree took the remaining singles with two points each from Paul Biddle, Stephen Jones and Ronnie McAloon with Richard Turner adding one. The visitors then added the doubles through Richard Turner and Ronnie McAloon with Paul Biddle completing a good victory by taking both captain's games against Tony Atkinson.

Willington League

The League Doubles Championship qualifiers were held at two venues with the winners from each moving on the Finals Night. At Hunwick Club the winners were Alan Lee and Kevin Hill, whilst at the Prospect Club the winners were John Gallagher and Phil Blyth. The date and venue of the Finals Night will be decided at the next league meeting.

Auckland Area League

The date and venue for Final's Day was decided at the league meeting this week. It will be held on June 21 at The Grand, Bishop Auckland. Play will start at around 12.30 when the final of the team knockout will be played along with the semi-finals and finals of the singles and doubles competitions.

This week saw the first round of the singles knockout played at eight venues with the final two players from each venue continuing through to the next round. The winners from the Bay Horse were Ian Golightly (Manor) and Tony Lambert (Bay Horse); the winners from the Voltigeur were Jeff Dixon (Derby) and Steven Webb (Manor); the winners from the Wheatsheaf were Andrew Delve (Derby) and Michael Kean (Grand 'A'); the winners from the King's Head were Garry Lamb (Bay Horse) and Rob Dalton (Grand 'A'); the winners from the Derby were Andrew Tuesday (King's Head) and Ron Wright (Manor); the winners from the Grand were Shaun Reynolds (Grand 'A') and Ben Smith (Hillingdon); the winners from the Manor were Dean Mains (Voltigeur) and David Graham (Voltigeur); the winners from the Hillingdon were Mark Heward (Green Tree) and Michael Wright (Bay Horse).

Spennymoor League

Spennymoor Voltigeur took full advantage of Spennymoor North Eastern's defeat at Spennymoor Railway A to move up to share top place after they only dropped two points to the visiting Spennymoor Crown.

The Voltigeur had singles wins from Dean Mains, Calvin Anderson and Andrew Mole, whilst Scott Shippen and Paul Glaister won for the Crown. The home side took both doubles through Andrew Mole with Calvin Anderson and Michael Craddock with Paul Wrightson. The Voltigeur completed a good victory when Dean Mains beat Colin Hunter in the captain's game.

Spennymoor Quinns Inn are three points behind the Voltigeur and the North Eastern, whilst Spennymoor Football Club are five points behind the Quinns.
