POLICE have launched a crackdown on bikers and off-road drivers to safeguard beauty spots.
Following the introduction of legislation making it an offence to damage a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Northumbria Police officers are targeting Sunderland beauty spots.
One area they are seeking to protect is Tunstall Hills, a natural landscape feature and local landmark with geological and botanical interest.
In conjunction with Sunderland City Council and English Nature, police are using the legislation to prosecute bikers and motorists caught damaging the site.
They are warning that anyone found guilty of an offence could face a fine of more than £20,000. Motorcyclists and drivers whose vehicles are not taxed or insured will also be prosecuted.
City countryside officer Claire Dewson said: "These people are ruining some of our greatest beauty spots.
"Now we have the power to take action and prosecute anyone who continues with this kind of behaviour."
