THE parents of a brave teenager who died from cancer are urging cyclists to help them raise thousands of pounds in his name.

Chris Lucas, from Wallsend, died in July 2000, aged 18, after contracting a rare form of cancer, called rhabdomyosarcoma, which affects the lung muscles.

His parents have set up the Great North Bike Ride to raise cash for the Chris Lucas Trust.

His mother, Lynn Lucas, said: "Last year we raised £23,000 with 392 cyclists taking part. We aim to double that amount this year if possible."

The ride takes in 50 miles of Northumberland coastline from Seahouses to Tynemouth Priory, starting from Seahouses at 9am on Sunday, August 24.

The entry fee is £5, to include a T-shirt and medal.
