A £200,000 recycling centre will be opened by Redcar and Cleveland Council at Warrenby, Redcar on Tuesday.

The centre, with 35 skips, is sited next to the council's cleansing depot on Tod Point Road and is designed for residents of Redcar, Grangetown, South Bank, Marske and New Marske. The centre will be open from 8am to 7pm from April to September and from 8am to 4.30pm from October to March. It will accept a range of materials including glass, cans, brick rubble, soil and general waste.

ART EXHIBITION: Work by part-time art students from Brinkburn and Elwick art groups will be on show in the foyer of Hartlepool Central Library, York Road, Hartlepool from June 7 to 20. The exhibition includes a wide range of subjects including flowers, animals and landscapes.

HOUSE BLAZE: Firefighters had to battle with thick smoke, missing floorboards and a staircase stripped of wood in a vandalised house, to put out a blaze started deliberately. Cleveland Fire Brigade reported severe fire damage to the ground floor of the empty terraced property - one of a row awaiting demolition in Granville Road, Grangetown, near Middlesbrough.

SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY: A family activity day is being held at the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum, Skinningrove on Friday, May 30 to celebrate the museum's 20th anniversary. The day begins at 9am with a walk along the Miners Way. From 10am there will be activities from yesteryear, which will continue throughout the day. Booking is essential for the walk. NEW CENTRE: A £425,000 sports pavilion opens today at a Hartlepool school. The centre, at Manor College of Technology, will provide a training ground for young soccer stars of the future and is expected to attract young hopefuls from across the North-East.
