THE commercial director of a North-East firm is using his love of speed to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Les Cowburn, of Durham Pine, will race a Porsche in one of the heats of the Northern Saloon and Sports Car Championships taking place at Croft Racing Circuit near Darlington tomorrow.

The Porsche will be branded with the Cancer Research UK logo in a bid to attract donations for the charity from spectators.

Durham Pine and some of its suppliers are also sponsoring the car and helping pay its entry fees into the race.

Mr Cowburn, from Bishop Middleham, said: "The idea came about after our Christmas raffle which raised £500 for Cancer Research UK.

"This is combining the fun and excitement of motor racing with raising money for a very worthwhile cause.

"The generosity of the sponsors has been overwhelming, not only pledging money to assist with entry fees but paying more than requested of them to ensure more funds for Cancer Research UK.

"Croft offers exceptional value for a family day out. Bring along the kids for a photo sitting in the car, but you may be asked to drop a few coins in the bucket."
