A CHURCH has had its public entertainment licence application deferred.

Darlington Borough Council's licensing committee heard yesterday that when officers went to inspect St Augustine's Parish Centre, in Larchfield Street, Darlington, they could not gain access.

Councillors decided to delay their decision until the building had been inspected.

MILLIONAIRE SPOT: Shoppers in Darlington are being given the chance to picture themselves as millionaires. A seaside-style cut-out of people enjoying the millionaire lifestyle will be at the Safeway store in Darlington today. In 2001 the store, in Victoria Road, sold a £7,573,460 winning jackpot ticket to Barry Moss, of Darlington.

DANCING AWARD: Sophie Metcalfe, 12, of Aycliffe Village who trains at the Born to Dance studio in Darlington, has received a bronze statuette to mark her achievements. She recently took first place in the Northern Ballet Competition in Washington. Ray Hawkeswood, also from Aycliffe Village, was so impressed by Sophie's achievements that he invited her to his Morton Pine shop at Morton Park, Darlington, to present her with a bronze statuette.

MUSIC LICENCE: A public musical entertainment licence was granted to Middleton St George Community Centre by Darlington Borough Council's licensing committee yesterday.

LICENCE GRANTED: Councillors in Darlington yesterday granted an occasional musical licence for a community carnival in Stanhope Park on June 28.

VILLAGE EVENT: An Eat and Meet event will be held on June 3, at Sadberge Village Hall, from 12.15pm. The speaker will be Beatrice Cuthbertson.

PLANNING MEETING: A meeting of Sedgefield Borough Council's development control committee will be held in the council offices, Green Lane, Spennymoor, tomorrow, at 10am.

FAIR DATE: St Peter's Church, Princes Street, Bishop Auckland, will host a mini-fair on Saturday, from 2pm to 4pm. Proceeds to go to Prince Bishops Jazz Band.

ART SHOW: An exhibition featuring watercolours and prints by Weardale artist Chris Mouncey has opened in Bishop Auckland Town Hall's McGuinness Gallery. The exhibition, called A Brush with the North, is open until Saturday, June 14.
