A PUSH by budget airline Ryanair to increase its customer base in the North-East has seen its market share soar 188 per cent.

The Irish carrier introduced two flights a day to Dublin from Newcastle to complement its route from Teesside.

The move raised Ryanair's passenger levels in the region to 17,000 a month.

"It just shows what Ryanair has done for the North-East. British Airways could not compete with our low fares so they packed up and slunk off in January," said Kathryn Munro, UK sales manager.

"Now the figures show we have taken all their North-East passengers and added more."
