St Joseph's Ladies Circle, Gilesgate Moor: JENNIE O'Hare chaired the May meeting, which began with prayers. Apologies were taken and the minutes of the previous meeting were read. Elizabeth Wilson was acting treasurer for the evening.

Everyone was thanked for the presentation of the Stations of the Cross in St Joseph's Church, which was much appreciated by the members of the congregation.

The speaker was Linda McDonough, community fundraising co-ordinator for Marie Curie Cancer Care. She gave a very informed talk on the work of the Marie Curie nurses, who are experts in caring for seriously ill cancer patients in their own homes free of charge. The vote of thanks was given by Elizabeth Wilson.

Mary Crilly and Jean Smith provided the refreshments. Vera Rooke won the raffle.

A quiz evening is being arranged by Mary Hoban and Sheila Patterson, to be held on Wednesday, June 4, in the Jubilee Room, St Joseph's Church.

Members are to visit Ushaw College for an escorted tour of the building followed by lunch on Friday, June 6.

New Brandon WI

THE president Linda Griffiths welcomed members to the 56th birthday meeting. Resolutions for the AGM in London were discussed and plans for the coffee morning on May 17 were finalised. Names were taken for the outing to the Gala Theatre to see My Fair Lady on June 24.

Members enjoyed a delicious supper prepared by Janice Devlin. Margaret Gould cut the cake, which was baked by June Fenwick and decorated by Lilian Goldsborough.

The entertainment was provided by the St Cuthbert's Hospice Entertainers, who had members singing along to songs from the Twenties to the Fifties.

The competition for a napkin ring was won by Joyce Jones and the raffle was won by Iris Winter, Dorothy Seed and Linda Griffiths.

The next meeting will be the annual general meeting, on Tuesday, June 10, at Silver Courts Hall. Visitors are welcome.
