PRIMARY school pupils have promised to complete the region's biggest race, even if it takes them weeks.

During the summer term, pupils at Ox Close Primary School, Spennymoor, will run the distance of the Great North Run.

They began yesterday and aim to complete the distance - 13 miles for juniors and the 4km children's run for infants - by running 15 minutes at a time.

Athlete Allison Curbishley helped launch the event, which will raise money towards redeveloping the school playground.

"The launch was a huge success, the weather was fantastic and all the children thoroughly enjoyed participating," said deputy headteacher Michelle Parker.

"We approached local businesses and are grateful to Spennymoor Sports for donating two trophies, McDonald's at Thinford for two parties for ten children and to Fitness First for donating water bottles and rucksacks full of goodies."

Prizes will be given to the children who complete the course and who raise the most sponsorship money. Great North Run organisers, Nova International will give medals to the children who complete the challenge.
