A PENSIONER recovering from breast cancer has won the honour of wearing race number one in this year's Cancer Research UK Race for Life.

Pauline Hustwick, from Richmond, North Yorkshire, entered The Northern Echo's competition to wear the coveted race number in this year's 5km race at South Park, in Darlington.

Mrs Hustwick, 68, will walk the course on Sunday, July 13, with her youngest daughter, Fiona.

For the past two years, Mrs Hustwick has been battling breast cancer and is now in remission, visiting hospital for check-ups every six months.

She fundraises for cancer charities and tours the region giving talks on her antiques collection and her memories of growing up during the war to raise money.

Mrs Hustwick is delighted to be taking part in her first Race for Life.

She said: "I have had breast cancer for the last two years and also suffer from angina, but I am determined to complete the distance.

"My doctor said it would be fine as long as I walk round and I will have my daughter for company.

"I have already started training and I am really looking forward to it."

Race for Life events are being held around the country, but it is only the second time that Darlington has had a 5km course.

The Northern Echo is supporting the event and is encouraging as many people as possible to get involved and walk, jog or run on the day.

Mrs Hustwick was delighted to win race number one.

She said: "I am so happy that I will be wearing the number one. I had already entered the race and have my own number, but it will be great to be number one.

"It is such a good cause I think everyone should take part. It is so easy to sign up and should be a lot of fun."
