FEARS of a significant fall in house prices in the south, and the effect this may have on the housing market nationally, are receding as confidence in the London market strengthens, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

In its latest survey of England and Wales, the RICS found a slight slowdown in the pace of house price increases in the past three months in the North-East.

Interest from buyers has strengthened, but remains weaker than it was last year and at the start of this year. New instructions rose, having dipped sharply in April, however expectations for home sales over the next three months slipped.

Mike Abel, RICS spokesman said the North-East is traditionally very steady, and the market usually slows in the summer then picks up again in September
