Darlington chairman George Reynolds is confident young midfielder Ashley Nicholls will be at the club next season.

The 21-year-old has struggled to settle in the North-East since joining the club on a free transfer from Ipswich Town last summer.

However, Reynolds insists Nicholls will return with the rest of the squad when it reassembles for pre-season training on June 30.

"He's only a young lad and he's bound to get homesick," said Reynolds. "He's a wonderful lad and we will do everything within our powers to help him settle up here." Nicholls is currently spending time with his family in his native East Anglia and Reynolds has angrily denied suggestions that the highly-rated youngster would not be returning.

He said: "We have a great set of young lads and Ashley is one player we certainly wouldn't want to lose. The manager is doing all he can to build a good young squad and the last thing we want to do is get rid of players like Ashley."

And Reynolds also reaffirmed Barry Conlon's future with the club. Despite continual interest from rival clubs - Carlisle are one to register an interest - Reynolds has assured fans last season's top scorer will be at the club in August.

The 24-year-old Dubliner, who hit 17 goals last season, has one year to run on his current contract after the club exercised its one-year option on him.

"I spoke to Barry at the end of the season and we have not had a problem at all," said Reynolds. "He is very happy at the club and he's looking forward to next season."

Manager Mick Tait returned from holiday this week and certainly looks to have his hands full in the coming weeks.

Defender Stuart Whitehead is still mulling over a new deal and should he turn down the offer, Tait could turn his attentions to former Hartlepool defender James Sharp.

Tait is also hoping to land former Sunderland winger Sam Aiston.
