A GANG member who killed a man went on to shoot a teenager in the eye while on bail, a court heard yesterday.

Carl Wesley Mason, 23, was one of a group of people who chased Mick Brolly through York and joined in a fatal attack.

Only six weeks later, in October 2001, Mason shot 17-year-old Ryan Carr in the eye.

At the time he was on bail after being accused of murdering Mr Brolly, of Margaret Street, Walmgate, York.

He received four years for wounding Mr Carr and possessing a firearm when on trial at Leeds Crown Court in April 2002.

Yesterday, Mason, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Hull Crown Court to a further four years imprisonment for his part in the manslaughter of 34-year-old Mr Brolly.

Mr Justice Treacy said he had taken into account what defending barrister Simon Jackson had told him about Mason's suffering in prison because of eczema, threats of retaliation against him, his inability to help his drug-using mother, and being separated from his three-year-old daughter.

"But I also remember that by your actions in the autumn of 2001, one young man lost an eye and has to live with the consequences of that for the rest of his life, and another family has lost a member permanently," the judge said to Mason.

Mason's former girlfriend, Leanne Beard, 20, formerly of Bull Lane, York, is serving three-and-a-half years, and Jason Rodney Hodgson, 32, of Spindle Close, Acomb, is serving four-and-a-half years after they admitted manslaughter on the day all three were due to stand trial for Mr Brolly's murder.
