TODDLERS Abby Waugh and Lois Wright may only be three-years-old, but have already proved they have an eye for design.

Abby won a contest to create a logo for the new Sure Start West Derwentside. The group was set up in Catchgate Primary School last December and offers help to parents and aims to get all under-fives primed and ready for school.

Sure Start worker Nicola Attewell said: "As we have evolved from Catchgate School, we asked the children of the nursery to draw a picture that they felt highlighted what Sure Start is all about.

"They learnt that Sure Start aims to improve the health and well-being of families and children before and from birth, so children are ready to flourish when they go to school.

"They also learnt that this includes improving the ability to play and learn, to strengthen families and communities, improving health and also social and emotional development.

"We had some fantastic entries from all the nursery children. There were a lot of big yellow suns and butterflies, smiling faces and rainbows."

The winning picture, in bold, bright colours, shows a smiling child going to the library with a parent. Ms Attewell said: "Both the parent and child have big smiles on their faces and the colours are bright and cheerful."

At a special presentation ceremony in Catchgate earlier this month, Abby received two books for her efforts, donated by Durham County Council's cultural services division.

Runner-up Lois also won a book and all the entrants received a pencil case and pencil.

Parents and children in Annfield Plain, Delves Lane, Leadgate, Crookhall, Dipton, The Grove and Moorside are invited to a Sure Start fun day, which takes place in The Grove Primary School, Consett, this Saturday, from 11am until 3pm.
