THE largest ever sale of machinery for potato and arable farming in the region will be held next month.

The Johnson family, who have been producing potatoes for McCains on their 900-acre Sandwath House Farm, near Forcett, North Yorkshire, since 1975, have decided on a change of direction and will focus on contract farming.

The move means they have an impressive array of equipment to sell. Bedale company George F White is handling the auction at Sandwath House Farm at 11am on Saturday, July 19.

"There is a full specification of modern machinery for sale," said spokesman Tom Oates. "It is high quality and is coming on to the market at the perfect time of year for the arable and potato farmer.

"We are anticipating a huge interest, as farm sales like this in the North-East are extremely few and far between, especially during the summer months."

A list of the machinery is available from George F White Offices in Bedale, Wolsingham and Alnwick or online at www.georgefwhite. co.uk
