Shildon Community Safety Group has been given a £500 award from the North Eastern and Cumbrian Co-op's community dividend fund.
The money bought 300 personal alarms and shed alarms for residents, including people from Shildon Court, who have also received safety talks.
The group was set up to raise awareness of crime issues and to work towards reducing crime and the fear of crime.
The Co-op's community dividend fund has supported more than 300 local projects in the past 12 months, giving out more than £140,000.
Grant awards are determined by members who serve on area committees across the North-East and Cumbria.
