A POLICE operation has helped to cut crime and juvenile disorder in Gateshead.

Recorded incidents of anti-social behaviour in the Birtley area of Gateshead West Area Command was halved and crime reduced by a third, while the detection rate increased.

Operation Aphid, which ran from May 1 to June 30, involved officers from Gateshead West supported by staff from force headquarters and a range of local partners, including Neighbourhood Wardens, housing officials and schools.

Seventy arrests were made with 25 search warrants executed for drugs and stolen property and significant amounts of alcohol seized from young people.

One off-licence owner is being prosecuted for selling alcohol to underage children.

Chief Inspector Ralph Logan said: "Analysis of crime and disorder has shown parts of Birtley have higher incident levels than other similar areas.

"We have been running a number of longer term problem-solving initiatives there, but wanted to supplement those with a short term, focused police operation.

"We are very pleased with the results and are now evaluating this pilot with a view to using it in other parts of Gateshead West."
