A CANCER patient sets off on a 194-mile walk today as his way of saying thank-you to the people who helped him on the road to recovery.
Ian Jones is doing a ten-day hike from St Bees Head, in Cumbria, to Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire, to raise money for a cancer charity and the hospital that treated him for testicular cancer.
The farm worker, from High Mowthorpe, in Malton, North Yorkshire, is being backed on the coast-to-coast walk by a team from the Brooklyn Community Centre, at nearby Norton, where he is a youth worker.
All the money raised from the walk will be divided between the St James' Hospital, in Leeds, and the Macmillan Nurses Appeal.
"I received splendid treatment and help, and I just want to show my appreciation by doing this and raising money," said Mr Jones.
The walking team will consist of four adults and six young people, a number of them members of local Scout troops.
It will not be the first time Mr Jones has completed the journey on foot - having done the coast-to-coast walk with friend Nick Monkman, raising £3,500 for Norton College.
