A Darlington school is celebrating a series of sporting successes.

Pupils at Carmel RC Technology College have notched up an impressive 23 trophies in only three days.

The Darlington Schools Athletics Championships was the first event the young athletes took part in.

They won 16 cups and shields out of a possible 20, including the George Clarke Cup, which is awarded to the overall winners of the championships.

It was the 14th consecutive year that the college has taken the cup.

The teams also won the boys and girls team, year seven, eight, nine and ten shields, and eight relays. Adam Grieve won the individual 1,500m event.

The year eight girls' team went home smiling after winning all their events and will go through to the national championships.

Pupil Phillip Collins stunned spectators when he broke the championship record in the high jump six times.

The 13-year-old managed to add 20cm to the old mark, finishing with 1.68m.

The school's run of success continued at the County Under-14 Multi Events Championships where its teams won the boys' and girls' team trophies in the pentathlon. Frances Nicholson won the individual heat.

On the third day of competing, the athletes took part in the Newcastle and Hexham Catholic Championships, where they saw off ten other schools to win all five trophies for the second consecutive year.

Star of their display was high jumper Phillip Collins, who surpassed his personal best and broke another championship record with a jump of 1.78m.

PE teacher Simon Hannaford said: "This has been a fantastic season for Carmel college.

"The athletes have performed to a fantastic level, breaking over 50 school and town records.

"They have made it through to the national finals and won several county championships."
