COMPANIES that encourage and support workers giving blood have been recognised at an awards ceremony held by the National Blood Service.

Companies and donor organisations received Supporter Loyalty Awards at a ceremony in the Tall Trees Hotel, in Yarm, as a way of thanking and acknowledging their generosity and support.

Representatives from 3M UK in Newton Aycliffe, British American Tobacco in Darlington, Darlington Memorial Hospital, EDS Credit Services in Stockton, and KP Foods in Billingham received awards.

Other recipients were BASF, Cleveland Police, Fine Organics, Huntsman Petrochemicals UK, Middlesbrough General Hospital, Conoco Phillips, the James Cook University Hospital, Prior Pursglove College in Guisborough, and Cleveland Potash in Saltburn.

Laura Summers, spokeswoman for the National Blood Service, said: "Host organisations and company blood donation sessions enable many people to donate blood in or near their workplace.

"This is an extremely important service to the National Health Service. The Darlington Memorial Hospital, alone, needs a weekly supply of nearly 100 units of blood."
